Buying a Sapphire

Sapphires are the perfect colored gemstone—durable (Mohs 9) and available in every shade. Choose a pink sapphire that suits you, from hot pink to baby pink. MySapphireSource offers a wide selection in various sizes and shapes. Sapphires over 1 carat are significant, and no two are alike, making our jewelry unique. Most are eye-clean and visually stunning, with minor inclusions accepted. Explore our blue, yellow, and rainbow sapphire jewelry, all hand-picked for quality and beauty.

About Sapphires

Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, is renowned for top-quality sapphires, though a major 1880 Kashmir find briefly stole the spotlight. By 1930, Kashmir’s mines were nearly exhausted, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s dominance. Today, sapphires also come from Madagascar, Australia, and Thailand. MySapphireSource specializes in brilliant Ceylon sapphires. Beyond blue, pink, and red, sapphires are called "fancy" or "rainbow sapphires," while red ones are classified as rubies.

Sapphire Gifts

Sapphire jewelry is the traditional gift for the fifth and forty-fifth wedding anniversaries and sapphire is the birthstone for September. My Sapphire Source specializes in fine quality sapphires and offers an amazingly gorgeous selection of sapphire rings, earrings, bracelets and pendants.

Enhancements

After mining, sapphires are cut to enhance color and brilliance. Heat treatment, a permanent and industry-accepted process, improves color and clarity without affecting stability. Less than 1% remain unheated, making them rare and valuable if their quality rivals treated stones. MySapphireSource offers select unheated sapphires for collectors, while most are heat-treated for optimal beauty.

Care of Sapphires

Clean your pink sapphire jewelry regularly to maintain its beauty. Dirt can dull the stones, so use a soft brush with lukewarm water. While durable, sapphires shouldn’t be cleaned with steam or ultrasonic methods, as they may loosen settings. Avoid strong chemicals or boiling water.

Fun Fact

While many associate sapphires with locations such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Madagascar, pink sapphires have also surfaced in surprising areas, including Montana, USA. The Yogo Gulch mine in Montana has yielded pinkish-violet sapphires that are naturally inclusion-free and do not require heat treatment. This rarity makes them especially prized among collectors who favor untreated, naturally brilliant gemstones.
