Buying a Sapphire

Sapphire is the ultimate colored gemstone, celebrated for its stunning hues and enduring durability with a Mohs hardness of 9. At MySapphireSource, our extensive rainbow sapphire collection is meticulously crafted in-house, ensuring complete control over the quality and vibrancy of every stone. We hand-select only the most vivid sapphires, so each piece displays a full spectrum—from red and orange to yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink. When buying rainbow sapphire jewelry, a design that incorporates every color creates an enchanting, complete expression of beauty.

About Sapphires

While its name derived from the Latin word for blue, sapphires dazzle in a spectrum of colors. Revered for their calming properties, these gems were once believed to protect against harm and envy. Before Kashmir's remarkable discovery in 1880, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) set the standard for fine sapphires; when Kashmir's supply dwindled by 1930, Sri Lanka remained synonymous with the world's most exquisite stones. Today, sapphires are also mined in Madagascar, Australia, and Thailand, appearing in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink—with hues beyond blue and pink known as "rainbow" or "fancy" sapphires. Sapphire jewelry is a classic gift for the 5th and 45th anniversaries, and sapphire is the birthstone of September.

Enhancements

Cutting is just the first step in revealing a gemstone's beauty; many enhancement techniques unlock the full spectrum of color, luster, and clarity in nature’s treasures. Most sapphires undergo heat treatment—a common, permanent, and industry-accepted process that dramatically improves their appearance, making them a dazzling and practical choice for fine jewelry. With less than 1% of sapphires remaining unheated, those rare stones command a premium when their quality equals that of treated gems. At MySapphireSource, discerning collectors can find select unheated sapphires, but our primary focus is on expertly heat-treated pieces that deliver exceptional color, clarity, and enduring value..

Care of Sapphires

Since sapphires are tough and durable, they can withstand most cleaning methods. Your sapphire jewelry may be cleaned with a soft-bristled brush or a cloth with plain or soapy water. Although steaming or ultrasonic cleaners are technically acceptable, we do not recommend these methods as they can cause the stones to loosen in their settings.

Fun Fact

Rainbow sapphires are nature's vibrant masterpieces, available in every hue imaginable. While blue remains the most famous, these gemstones can dazzle in fiery reds, brilliant oranges, sunny yellows, lush greens, royal blues, enchanting purples, and delicate pinks. The secret behind this spectrum lies in trace elements: chromium is responsible for red and pink tones, iron contributes to yellow shades, and vanadium can lend a captivating purple glow. This natural infusion of elements transforms ordinary sapphires into an extraordinary display of color, making each stone a unique celebration of nature’s palette.
